Highlights from 2005's Superconference

Filled to capacity, the audience enjoyed an informative and entertaining program that included a Point/Counterpoint discussion by “The Dynamic Duo” of TCEQ Commissioner Larry Soward and EPA Deputy Regional Administrator Larry Starfield and an Up for Debate question and answer session (“The Justice League”) with high level representatives from TCEQ and EPA discussing a variety of policy issues.

The keynote presentation was given by Ann Klee (left), Assistant Administrator/General Counsel of EPA, who returned to the program following her first complete year in office.  Each topic had its Superhero “alter ego.”  For instance, the Legislative Update was subtitled with Spiderman’s mantra, “With great power, there must also come great responsibility.” For the 2005 program click here.

The audience competed in Superhero trivia quizzes (e.g., “Name two Superheroes or villains whose powers were derived from exposure to releases of contaminants to the environment.”), and vied to name each Superhero’s Arch Enemy and Alter Egos.

(Alter Ego David Whitten found his Superhero persona of “The Thing” helpful in dealing with questions from a representative of a governmental agency about Municipal Settings Designations.)

For the first time, on the eve of the main program, there was a separate 2 ½ hour program on the fundamentals of environmental law - Environmental Law 101, which included sessions on an overview of environmental law and Superfund, air quality, water quality, solid waste management, and conservation programs. The conference was sponsored jointly by the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section of the State Bar, the Air & Waste Management Association-Southwest Section, the Water Environment Association of Texas, the Texas Association of Environmental Professionals, The Auditing Roundtable, and the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy and Resources.
